Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that the Blues need to improve upon their mentality, making it stronger and more stable, if they wish to have any chance of challenging for the Premier League title.
The Portuguese was quoted in The Guardian, saying: “We’re not strong enough now to have that run of victory, victory, victory. We will, for sure, but not now. It comes from work, work, work … change their mentality by working. Make them feel and accept the responsibility of playing for a big club with big ambition, where you can’t go win-lose-win-lose. This mental stability is hard to get… I’m not saying the club had [a poor mentality]. But they learned how to live without pain in a situation where, with another mentality, it would be painful.
“The day I lose and go home with a smile … goodbye. Finish. It’s something you have naturally or you get it. You have to get it,” he added.
The manager’s words hinted at a comparison with the Blues’ title winning side of 2004-05, which he managed during his first stint at the west London club. He also cited the example of Chelsea’s inconsistent and disappointing display in the domestic circuit in the recent past which has led to them not performing upto the mark in the Premier League, despite winning European competitions like the Champions League and the Europa League.
While most fans might have been hoping to see their team performing the way they did during Mourinho’s first stint as manager, it seems they would have to wait for sometime before they can see the results they have been hoping for. The Portuguese is moulding the players into an entirely different mental frame and the process is likely to take a bit of time.
