Arsenal now tip as genuine Champions League contender

Former England national team coach Fabio Capello has backed north Londoners Arsenal to be strong contenders for the Champions League crown and considers the Gunners to possess greater chances of laying their hands upon the coveted trophy than any other English side.

Capello was quoted in The Daily Mirror, saying: “Before the first round of Champions League games, I thought Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona… From England, I like Arsenal.”

The Italian also spoke about the importance of winning the Champions League trophy, labelling it as the ‘most important trophy for people working in football’, and a player and a manager’s dream.

The Gunners have never won the European trophy before in their history, coming closest in the 2005-06 season when they lost to Barcelona in the Final. However this year, the north Londoners are looking pretty strong and are touted to put up a strong challenge for titles. The club currently leads the Premier League and have also proved their point in the Champions League by performing excellently against some very formidable opponents. With a number of critics backing Arsene Wenger’s men to end their 8-year long trophy wait, it remains to be seen if they are finally able to grace their trophy cabinet with a European title.
