The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) said on Thursday that a Norwegian national of Somali origin was possibly involved in last month's terror attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Kenya's capital of Nairobi.
Two PST agents have been sent to Nairobi to provide assistance for their Kenyan counterparts in their investigation, said Trond Hugubakken, a spokesman for the Norwegian security agency.
As many as 67 people were killed in the four-day episode, which started on Sept. 21 when a group of gunmen suddenly went on shooting spree at the popular shopping center.
The Norwegian man in his 20s was alleged to have played a central role in the deadly attack, according to a PST press release issued on Thursday.
"The information we have obtained provides evidence that a Norwegian citizen of Somali origin was among the attackers who were inside the Westgate (shopping mall)," said Hugubakken, who refused to go into details about the man.
The man grew up in Norway, reported the Norwegian broadcast company NRK.
The PST said that it will try to identify any person associated with Al-Shabaab which claimed responsibility for the killings.
According to Norwegian police, support in Norway for Al-Shabaab has fallen in recent years but there are still people in Norway collecting money for the terrorist group.
"We are aware that people from Norway have joined Al-Shabaab," said Hugubakken.
